Pepe the Penguin emerges from the creative universe of Matt Furie, the artist behind Boys Club and its iconic cast Pepe the Frog, Andy, Brett, and Landwolf.
Despite sharing the name, Pepe the Penguin is not a rehash of the frog nor an extension of the philosophies often projected onto him. He isn’t rooted in Nietzscheanism, nihilism, or lone-wolf mythology. Instead, Pepe the Penguin is social by nature playful, communal, and grounded in togetherness.
The character appeared in Furie’s Zogz NFT collection and has been acknowledged through multiple tweets from Furie himself. Now arriving on Ethereum, Pepe the Penguin signals a return to the lighthearted, expressive energy that defined early internet culture.
Which raises an open question: why did Matt Furie choose to reuse the name “Pepe” for a penguin? Is it a deliberate echo, a shared spirit across characters, or simply a familiar name repurposed for a different expression entirely? Same name very different vibe.
